Did Snape love Lily? If he did it would explain a lot! It would explain why he hates Harry, why Lily was going to be spare in her duel with Voldemort, why Dumbledore trusts him, who was at Godric’s Hallow on that fateful night, and it would explain his worst memory. He hated Harry so much because Harry was the son of Lily and James Potter. James was a bully and an enemy when they were in school and Lily was the only one who treated him kindly, which resulted in a major crush. So to see the two of them hook up in the end was heart breaking for Snape. It was only natural for him to hate the child of the women that he love. The fact that Harry was nearly a carbon copy of James in terms of appearance only made it worse, because every time Snape looked at Harry he saw the reflection of the man he hated so much. Also every time Snape looked at Harry he probably could not help himself from thinking that if he wasn’t born, then Lily would still be alive because Harry would not have been alive to be saved by her.

That fateful night at Godric’s Hallows also proved Snapes love for her. First of all, everyone must realize that someone else had to be at Godric’s Hallows the night of the faithful attack because people found out about what happened rather then just finding two people murdered in a house and also what remained of Voldemort and that his wand was taken away somewhere. Anyways, that night, Snape who must have already proven himself to be Voldemort’s most trust worthy servant (possibly proved himself by suggesting that Peter Pettigrew was their secret keeper and pressuring him to tell the secret). Therefore he was able to ask for a favor of the Dark Lord to spare Lily and may have told him that she could be useful. Though, when Lily wouldn’t move, Voldemort got nervous and just killed her and Harry. This was what pushed Snape too far! Voldemort just killed his only true love and from that point on he promised himself to avenge Lily and that was the moment he decided to join Dumbledore. He went to Dumbledore and told him everything. He gave the first hand story about what happened and why he wanted to join his side. This proved to Dumbledore that he could be trusted because he put everything on the line. He put his life, feelings and future in front of Dumbledore to decide what to do with him. Instead of Dumbledore killing or turning him in like most would do he gave him protection and a job.

I also, mentioned that Snape’s love for Lily would explain his worst memory. His worst memory as we found out in Harry Potter and the Order of the Pheonix during Harry’s occlemcy lesson with Professor Snape was because of Lily. His worst memory was about James bulling him and then Lily came to his rescue, because she came to his rescue he wanted to prove to everyone, and especially Lily, that he could defend himself but he couldn’t do that when she was sticking up for him. Then after they finally stopped, he was mad at her and then he called her a mudblood (a super mean and nasty word). Then she got really up set and insulted him and called him Snivellus (they name that James and Sirius teased him with). This was his worst memory because he insulted his love and then she got really upset and insulted him right back. She became exactly what she was just trying to protect him from.
