I’m sure just about every girl has thought about their marriage proposal. Some envision it being a private affair with just you and the other person while others envision a big event with a day full of activities or maybe a planned event with lots of friends and family. Regardless of the proposal, when the day comes it’s going to be perfect (maybe not minute by minute perfect but you’ll realize just how perfectly things fall into place after it happens). Here’s how my and Jordan’s proposal unfolded.

Let’s start a couple days before the day…

Days Leading Up

Thursday, December 6, 2018

I can remember the Thursday before the proposal so vividly. The date was Thursday, December 6, 2018. Jordan came home that night, after attending a holiday party with our good friend Christina, when he came in and said he wanted to host a brunch at the apartment. Now, the idea of hosting a brunch is perfectly fine but not when it’s at an apartment you just moved into a week prior. Boxes were packed, bare walls, and the apartment was missing basic necessities. I remember being half asleep asking the following questions “Why this weekend? Why the rush? You still have boxes everywhere, there’s a mess… no.. we can do it next weekend” He disagreed and was adamant it happen that Saturday.

Friday, December 7, 2018

The next morning came and I asked if he was sure about having a brunch. He said, “Yes”. I reminded him of all of the things we didn’t have and needed to do such as buy a trashcan, buy more plates and silverware.

Side note: this man had been living with only owning 3 forks, 3 spoons, and 5 butter knives (why so many knives? I. don’t. know.).

We worked all day Friday as usual and met up after work to run around town and buy the many items his apartment needed. We got home late that night and busied ourselves with opening boxes, hanging frames, putting away silverware, plates, and making the apartment presentable. I was deeply frustrated with him for insisting on hosting a brunch when his apartment was clearly not ready and making us rush to it put together. Jordan stayed cool, calm, and collected the entire night as he listened to me ramble (I can only imagine what was going on his head, "do I really want to do this?" also, he might recall the night differently… you can ask him about that). We finally went to sleep some time past midnight after everything was mostly put away or at least hidden. Friday was over and Saturday was around the corner.

The Day

Saturday, December 8, 2018

Jordan woke up bright and early for the day. While it was a little unusual, we still had a lot to get done so I didn’t think too much of it. I went to the gym for my typical Saturday morning routine and accepted that the brunch was inevitable.

As I got ready for the day, Jordan went to the store for last minute food items, fresh fruit, eggs, bacon, toppings for waffles, etc. (yummy!) to make a delicious brunch for our friends. As everyone started arriving I was in the kitchen cooking a mean brunch, breaking a small sweat, when my sister in law, Amanda, asked if I needed help. While we were standing over the stove cooking I remember looking at her and saying “I have no clue why he wanted to do this today.” and “Can you believe he was about to order food and spend a fortune?” Amanda just smiled and laughed knowingly as she helped me finish cooking. Little did I know they were all there for a special surprise.

As everyone finished eating I sat down to take a second to enjoy everyone’s company when Jordan got up and started a speech, “Everyone, thanks for coming, you guys are important to us. I wanted to let you guys know that Alex has made me very happy these past couple of years…” he continued to say a lot of nice things about me, I was suprised. He nervously started the next line “with that being said…” he got down on one knee and said the magical words, “Will you marry me?”

I would like to say the first words out of my mouth were “Yes!” but what I actually replied with was “are you serious?”. Then, because I was in absolute shock, I said “No…. way…” There was a pause between the ‘no’ and the ‘way’ and in true Alex fashion, I started explaining why I said that. I can only imagine what was going through Jordan’s head as I rambled. My mouth was saying words before my brain could think of them. Once my brain caught up to my mouth, I exclaimed, “Yes!”

As I said before, while all the moments may not be perfect on their own, all together, the proposal was perfect. I will not be forgetting the day any time soon, it was the most perfectly imperfect day and I wouldn’t change a single thing.

After we had a few minutes of enjoying the moment we got busy sharing it with our parents and grandparents. The reactions from everyone over facetime was so sweet and to be honest, it was a lot of fun to casually hold up my left hand to show off my new rock. I’m not here to tell you what you should do on your own day but I highly recommend telling your parents and grandparents that day to see their reaction. It was a ton of fun!

I can’t thank our friend’s enough for attending the proposal brunch. They did an amazing job keeping it a secret, making it seem like a normal Saturday morning, and then witnessing and capturing the special moment.

Take a look at some of the pictures from the special day!

Now that you know my proposal story, what's your proposal story? I would love to hear how you were proposed to down in the comments.

Stay tuned for the next post on the Proposal Chronicles.

XOXO, Alex
